What is Tap2Ride?
El Dorado Transit’s Tap2Ride program offers a contactless fare payment system that allows passengers to pay their general or discount* bus fare using contactless-enabled Visa, Mastercard or Discover payments, including debit cards, credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet and wearable devices such as smartwatches.
Tap2Ride is available for the following services:
- Local Bus Service
- Commuter Service
- Dial-A-Ride
Not available on these services:
- Sac-Med
- Sacramento/South Lake Tahoe Connecting Bus
How do I know if my card is “Contactless”?
Cards that are contactless-enabled have the universal contactless icon which resembles a Wi-Fi symbol on it’s side.
Fare Capping
Fare capping is available for Tap2Ride users and guarantees you won’t be charged more than $4.50 per day ($2.25 for registered Senior 65+ and Medicare Card Holders) on Local Fixed Routes.
To take advantage of fare capping, you must always use the same payment method each time you tap. For example: Don’t use your iPhone to tap on for one trip, and then tap for your next trip with your Apple Watch. Even though the same bank card may be linked via both devices, you will lose the benefit of fare capping.
Discounted Fare
Currently, discounts are available for the following passengers:
-
- Seniors 65+
- Medicare Card Holders
Riders who qualify for a discounted fare can verify their eligibility and register their contactless card here https://benefits.calitp.org/ and select El Dorado County Transit Authority as the transit provider.
El Dorado Transit has partnered with CalITP – the California Integrated Travel Project, an initiative of the State of California – to offer a way to quickly verify your eligibility for a discount using Login.gov and then link that discount to your contactless enabled Visa, Mastercard or Discover card. You’ll get your discount every time you pay with that same contactless card.
* Note: Although seniors aged 60 and over are eligible to receive discounted fare under El Dorado Transit’s approved fare structure, the age qualification for senior in the State of California is 65. The Tap2Ride system links into the federal Social Security Administration database to confirm eligibility.
